What We Inspect and Why

A home inspection is a visual examination of the home's major structure, systems, and components that are visible and safely accessible. Buying a home is typically the biggest investment you will ever make, so it's important to get a home inspection because the inspector can find and document defects that may or may not be obvious to you as a prospective buyer.  Such defects can range from simple replacements or repairs to severe damage or safety and health concerns.

  1. Interior, exterior, walls, windows, and doors

  2. HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning)

  3. Basement, crawlspace, and structure

  4. Fireplace

  5. Roof and attic

  6. Electrical

  7. Plumbing

Meet Your Inspector

ALAN ELDER

Alan is a United States Marine Corps Veteran, having served 1975-1982 stationed in Virginia Beach. After serving, Alan completed his college education and began a career in the hospitality industry, working for Marriott Hotels in the food and beverage arena for 15 years. Alan then started the buildout and investment into a small limited-service restaurant. Elderberry's restaurant (a still iconic smoothie and wrap shop in Roanoke, VA) grew, and Alan managed and oversaw the buildout of six stores.

Upon selling the business, Alan completed an entire flip and home boat renovation of a 62' houseboat in Annapolis, MD. To continue fine-tuning his inspection qualifications, Alan became a Coast Guard credentialed 100-ton captain, captained boats, inspected boats, and worked with a team of hospitality individuals to create great water experiences.

After building, constructing, and inspecting for the military and his business, he began the education qualification process with the internationally known organization, InterNACHI. Once certified in home inspections to include electrical, plumbing, pool&spa, HVAC, roofing, and numerous other certifications, Alan began mentoring and completed over 70 supervised home inspections before the birth of the Service Initiative Group.

Alan has grown his business with marketing, working closely with reputable and respected realtors, lenders, satisfied buyers, and sellers.

No one compares Alan's attention to detail, his calm presentation skills with clients, to his rapid, efficient appointment setting to promptly delivering final reports.

We Educate Our Clients

During the home inspection, we will show you how everything in your house works, how to maintain it, and how to save home energy. I will include a 100-page home maintenance book along with your home inspection report. Scientific evidence demonstrates a solid relationship between housing conditions and human health. I will make sure your home supports your health.
